Plans to construct the temple were announced 17 March 1999, Church leaders broke ground 24 April 1999, and President James E. Faust, then second counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, dedicated the San José Costa Rica Temple 4 June 2000. The temple serves Latter-day Saints in Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

The San José Costa Rica Temple is the 87th operating temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The church's First Presidency announced on March 17, 1999, that a temple would be built in San José, Costa Rica.

The Costa Rica temple is absolutely gorgeous and stands right in the heart of San Jose, the country's capital. It was the 87th temple built and was completed in 2000. As if the temple wasn't stunning enough on its own, the two acre temple surrounding grounds are gorgeous, peppered with palm trees and row after row of bright flowers.

(January 2021) On July 8, 1946, Costa Rica became part of the LDS Church's Mexican Mission. The first two missionaries, Robert B. Miller and David D. Lingard, arrived in Costa Rica on September 6, 1946. They presented Costa Rican president Teodoro Picado Michalski a copy of the Book of Mormon and began preaching in the country.
