He grew up in a family of artists and writers and was exposed to avant-garde art and music from a young age. Eye's father was a painter, and his mother was a writer. Hanatarashi ( ハナタラシ ), meaning "sniveler" or "snot-nosed" in Japanese, was a noise band created by later Boredoms frontman Yamantaka Eye and featured Zeni Geva guitarist Mitsuru Tabata.
