Comet first started making snowmobile clutches for John Deere. The 94C Duster clutch and the 102C clutch were developed exclusively for JD. The Snowfire was the last production snowmobile on the market to have a free-air engine, and the last snowmobile in production for John Deere. In 1980, John Deere was the official supplier of snowmobiles.

1971: This was the first year that John Deere produced snowmobiles at its plant in Horicon, Wisconsin. This decision was powered by the shift towards snow sports that occurred at the beginning of the decade. The first two models to be produced were the 400 and the 500. The 400 was a 339 cc model, while the 500 was a 436 cc model.

The Liquifire was one of the faster snowmobiles that John Deere produced, and it's gained a bit of popularity with vintage sleds collectors for that reason. It came with a 436cc 2-stroke Kawasaki engine that had around 70 horsepower.
